Serene is a redesigned hospital gown developed in collaboration with NHS Edinburgh Children's Hospital to improve comfort, dignity, and emotional wellbeing for young patients. Inspired by traditional garments like kimonos and the visual language of everyday clothing, the gown blends familiar design cues with hospital functionality. The project aimed to reduce anxiety and discomfort during medical treatment by creating attire that feels personal, empowering, and inclusive both physically and emotionally.

Development

The design process began with user-led research, identifying discomfort and exposure issues in conventional gowns. I sketched and prototyped several concepts influenced by kimono structures and child-friendly fasteners. Using soft, breathable materials like polyester blends and incorporating Velcro closures instead of straps, I created a modular gown with integrated trousers for full coverage. Prototypes were tested, and feedback led to simplifications like the removal of lower straps. Parallel research explored sizing based on age percentile data (ages 11–16) and NHS uniform color psychology to ensure the design harmonized with hospital environments. Additionally, I developed a patch-based reward system inspired by scout merit badges, fostering a sense of achievement and individuality for patients during their stay.
